Makoto Shinkai has recently announced that he is directing a new film that will debut in August 2016. Kimi no Na Wa or Your Name appears to be another love story of sorts, which are my favorites from what Shinkai has done, 5 Centimeters Per Second and *The *Garden of Words are among my favorite anime movies. Even though we don’t know very much about it at this point, it is still great news. Shinkai is not the only veteran on the team either. It also appears as though Masashi Ando will be the animation director. Ando is known for his work on movies like Spirited Away and Paprika, two films that get a **lot **of respect for their imaginative stories and animation. Your Name will also feature Masayoshi Tanaka as the character designer. Tanaka is known for his lovable characters from shows like *Anohana *and Toradora!
I’m very excited to see where the film will take us. Will it be an “anti-romance” in the vein of 5 Centimeters Per Second? Or will it touch on the taboo, like in The Garden of Words? The transcripts from the website (which is equally as gorgeous) seem to suggest that it will be exploring something a little bit different:
The “story of miracles and love” revolves around Mitsuha and Taki. Mitsuha is a female high school student who lives in a rural town nestled deep in the mountains. Her father is the mayor and isn’t at home much, and she lives with her elementary school-aged little sister and her grandmother. Mitsuha has an honest personality, but she doesn’t like the customs of her family’s Shinto shrine, nor does she like her father participating in an election campaign. She laments that she lives in a confined rural town, and yearns for the wonderful lifestyle of living in Tokyo. Taki is a male high school student who lives in central Tokyo. He spends time with his friends, works part-time at an Italian restaurant, and is interested in architecture and fine arts. One day, Mitsuha has a dream where she is a young man. Taki also has a dream where he is a female high school student in a town in the mountains that he has never been to. What is the secret to their dreams of personal experience?
We will keep you updated with any news on Your Name, and we will be sure to get a review up as soon as we can get our hands on it! For now, just check out the trailer:
